How to stay happy when everything seems to go wrong

A lot of us see happiness as an end goal, something to work towards and that will be that. If I get that promotion, I’ll be happy, if I get to be with that person, I’ll be happy, if I earn more money, I’ll be happy, if get that house, I’ll be happy and so on. We seem to forget that happiness is a genuine feeling coming from within. Is not connecting to a certain object or person missing from our lives. Is a feeling that’s already within you, you have the power to let it out or to drown it under your mundane daily problems.
I know what you’re thinking now, that I don’t know what I’m talking about, that when you have real problems you can’t just let go and be happy about it. That you can’t just turn off sadness. I’m not saying don’t feel sad or don’t feel shitty if something bad happens to you. By all means, give that shitty feeling a place, but don’t let it linger for too long. Once you do that if will become a permanent houseguest keeping the rest of the jolly residents at bay. Is so easy to feel sorry for yourself and be the victim of your circumstances. Is much harder to get up and do something about it, to start over, to choose to be positive about the shitshow happening around you.
Life is all about the choices we make. We can always choose again, we can choose to be happy, we can choose to be great, we are the lucky ones that can choose every day what we want to be. You don’t like your job? Choose a different path, you don’t feel passion and romance in your relationship anymore? Work on it, it still doesn’t work out? break up, move on, want to travel the world? Buy a one-way ticket and don’t look back, want to feel loved and supported, invest in your family and friends, want to excel at something? Put in the effort, don’t just sit there wanting it, want to have more time? you already do, you’re just choosing to spend it on things that don’t matter and complain about that you don’t have time for yourself and all the great things you want to do.
We are the ones that choose. And in a world of infinite possibilities it’s sometimes hard to choose the things that are always good for us, that will make us happy.
Like said before, happiness is not one thing, is not the ultimate thing, is the small things, connected together, to you. Is the enjoyment of a deep conversation, is the smell of coffee in the morning, is the loving kiss from your partner, is the perfect song in the car, is a hot shower after a rainy day, is the love we get from the people in our life, is the respect we feel for ourselves. Happiness is in the smallest things and is every day and everywhere. But if we’re to busy just looking ahead, looking for down, looking for things that aren’t there to stress about. We will never see the extraordinarily small things happening around us that gives us a sense of joy and add to our general happiness.
Get out of your head, notice your surroundings and your blessings. For every little thing that goes wrong in your life, there are thousands that go your way but that you take for granted. Every day you wake up, you have all your limbs, a healthy heart that pumps blood through your veins, eyes that are able to see beauty, a mouth that can speak kind words to others, a life that you’ve created. You’re blessed dear, every second you breath, you’re blessed and you can revel in that.
